Halyk Ormany as a Partnership Platform for Forest Restoration in Kazakhstan

On January 30, a business meeting of Kazakhstani and international companies was held in Almaty under the umbrella of the Halyk Ormany environmental project, according to the press service of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The large-scale environmental project Halyk Ormany focuses on forest restoration, urban and regional greening, and the promotion of sustainable development in Kazakhstan. The initiative is implemented by the Halyk Charitable Foundation in cooperation with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan and contributes to the national environmental campaign Taza Kazakhstan.

As part of the five-year program, approximately 9 million seedlings and saplings are planned to be planted in key natural areas of the country, including Ile-Alatau National Park, the Semey Ormany forest reserve, and the Green Belt of the capital. In 2025, the Foundation allocated KZT 1 billion to the implementation of the project.

The project involves volunteers, public figures, representatives of culture and sports, youth, and local communities. During the autumn planting season of 2025, around 850,000 seedlings and saplings were planted using the Foundation’s own funds. Approximately 1,500 people took part in the planting activities, including activists and representatives of government bodies.

Halyk Ormany is developing as an open partnership platform and demonstrates that any company can contribute to forest restoration in Kazakhstan. The Halyk Charitable Foundation acts as the operator and organizer of the project, providing financing, coordination, planting activities, and interaction with volunteers and government authorities. The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources ensures the necessary conditions for planting, subsequent forest maintenance, and reporting.

The participation model is based on transparency and efficiency. Funds from private companies are allocated strictly for the purchase of seedlings and saplings, while all organizational aspects remain the responsibility of the Foundation. This approach allows businesses to achieve measurable environmental outcomes and use participation in the project as a practical ESG implementation tool.

Kazakhstani and international companies are already joining Halyk Ormany. The international pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has expressed its readiness to participate in the project and allocate funds for planting seedlings. The decision was made following the business meeting. Partner engagement helps increase planting volumes and expand restored forest areas.

Halyk Ormany continues to scale up and demonstrates in practice that effective cooperation between the government, charitable organizations, and business can deliver tangible results, restore degraded lands, enhance carbon resilience, and contribute to biodiversity conservation.

These topics can be discussed at the International Practical Conference on Improvement and Greening of Public Spaces Jasyl Astana. As part of the event, speakers will address forest and degraded land restoration, the development of eco-parks in cities and suburban areas, sustainable greening models, public–private partnerships, and the practical implementation of ESG initiatives. The conference will take place on April 9 within the framework of the XIII International Exhibition of Floriculture and Green Industry Flora Expo Astana 2026.

Attendance fee: online / before the exhibition — KZT 5,000 (free with promo code FEA34WB2ART), on site / during the exhibition — KZT 10,000. The event is intended for professionals in urban improvement, greening, landscape architecture, urban planning, development, and public space management.

It is worth noting that the development of eco-parks in the capital and surrounding region has recently been discussed in Astana.
