China’s flower imports to Kazakhstan increased nearly 13 times

According to Kursiv, Kazakhstan significantly increased its flower imports from China in 2024, nearly 13 times more compared to the previous year. While the country imported $0.6 million worth of flowers from China in 2023, this figure surged to $7.5 million in 2024. As a result, China moved up from fifth to fourth place among Kazakhstan’s largest flower suppliers.

The total value of imported flowers in Kazakhstan reached $93.6 million in 2024, reflecting a 52.8% increase compared to 2023 ($61.3 million). The leading flower suppliers remain Ecuador, the Netherlands, Kenya, China, and Colombia, accounting for 97.5% of total imports.

Despite the surge in Chinese imports, its market share remains 8%, compared to just 1% in 2023. The remaining 2.5% of flower imports come from Russia ($0.6 million), Uzbekistan ($0.43 million), Belarus ($0.4 million), Israel ($0.3 million), and other countries.

Roses remain the most popular flowers in Kazakhstan, accounting for $61 million, or 65% of all flower imports. Other sought-after flowers include chrysanthemums, carnations, lilies, orchids, ranunculus, and gladiolus.

Kazakhstan’s flower exports in 2024 totaled $7.7 million, with 99.2% of the shipments directed to Russia. The remaining 0.8% was exported to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.

As reported by Kursiv, the flower company Zhuldyz flowers noted that the most in-demand flowers in Kazakhstan include spray roses, hydrangeas, and tulips. Additionally, the company highlighted that 40% of its flower imports come from China, with Kenya, Ecuador, and Colombia among the other key suppliers. Apart from imports, Zhuldyz flowers also cultivates flowers domestically, covering 30% of its supply through in-house production.
